If you have high Focus, difficult tasks become easier. You get two Responsibilities assigned each day (I think) if you do one or both, you get a boost to your Focus, and if you don't do either, you get a penalty to your Focus.įocus is something similar to Mood in the core franchise (Moodlets raise and lower your Focus), but Focus relates specifically to quest performance. Responsibilities are side tasks that you can do, and that help improve your Focus, but aren't required - things like slaying some minor monsters or ruling on peasant petitions. Quests are what moves the gameplay forward - major tasks that affect the whole kingdom, such as slaying (or recruiting!) a powerful monster that's living nearby, capturing or freeing a genie, or dealing with (or putting down) a peasant revolt. You have explicit goals to complete, defined as Quests and Responsibilities. Most of the Needs from The Sims are gone, except for Energy and Hunger - you don't need to micromanage their every action in order to keep them happy. However, the core of the game isn't the same open, sandboxy concept as the main Sims franchise. You can chat with other Sims, flirt, get to know, WooHoo, and so on inter-sim relationships work pretty much the same as in The Sims 3. Control of your active sim's movements and actions is done in exactly the same way as in The Sims 3 - click on items, choose an action from a radial menu. Having a few hours of Sims Medieval under my belt now, I'm still not ready to give a review of the game (there are still far too many mechanics that I haven't even really touched yet, such as Conquest), but I can make a few comments on it, at least.įirst, the basic gameplay borrows most of what people know from The Sims, especially The Sims 3 (which is no surprise, I suspect that it uses the Sims 3 engine). If the game is as broad and flexible as The Sims 3, why are the trailers so superficial? That said, Andara's ordered it, so I will be playing it.

While I do appreciate the Sims style, I have to wonder why so many of the trailers focus so heavily on The Pit, where some tentacular beastie lives. Here is the official site for it (strange that EA couldn't secure a separate URL specifically for the game).

They've released a half-dozen videos, as well as a barrage of TV commercials, in preparation for the game. The Sims has always had "experience" of a sort (learning skills), but in The Sims Medieval, the experience is more explicit - one of the trailers shows a "10 xp" floater over a Sim's head after she beats another Sim in swordfighting. Rather than the Jack-of-all-Skills that is typical for Sims characters in previous games, your character's Class appears to define what you can or can't do. It seems that there are analogues for all of the classic Sims mechanics - Wants are called Ambitions, instead of jobs they have Quests, and - in a departure for the franchise - different characters have different classes. It takes the usual Sims sense of humor and social interaction, and drops it into a fantasy-medieval setting, complete with knights, kings, magic users, executioners, and so on. Maxis/EA is releasing an entirely new game - not an expansion for The Sims 3 - entitled The Sims Medieval. Here, EA has another opportunity to create and add a new pre-made family into the mix with a medieval twist.It's odd that there isn't a thread about this game yet, so I guess it's up to me to make it! Then again, The Sims franchise is one of my guilty pleasures, and I suspect that there are a lot of gamers who feel the same way - you play it, but you don't really discuss it much. An expansion that takes players back to the past could also add new career paths and ambitions. Players could live in large castles or inns, becoming nobles or innkeepers if they please, and decorate their homes with period furnishings and fixtures. This expansion pack style would be able to tie the main storyline of The Sims to that of 2011's The Sims Medieval, taking Sims back to the Middle Ages. On the flip side, the Curious family's time machine could take players' Sims back into the past rather than the future. This expansion pack for The Sims 4 could also bring back the studious Curious family into The Sims series, who could be responsible for creating the device that takes Sims into the future. A futuristic expansion pack could give a sci-fi twist to the lives of players' Sims, allowing them to live in spaces akin to that of The Jetsons - or maybe even live in space on a moon or with the opportunity to live on other Sim-colonized planets.
